It’s a tough time for our country. After speaking to some of the other sleuths, I think the general consensus is one of immense disappointment in the GOP Congress. For some of us, this sleuthing work started because it was fun and then when we understood how bad it was - we hoped to keep the conversation going until Republicans gained seats of power to do something about it.
They are not going to.
I have a little knowledge on this and the Republican Weaponization Committee, that they compared to the Church Committee, is a nothing-burger. They haven’t hired anyone, they have no budget, and worse, they have no plans to look at anything of significance.
They aren’t asking the right questions. Or even asking questions at all.
There are only two reasons you don’t ask questions, either you think you know more than the person you are talking to or you don’t want to hear the answers. I don’t know which it is.
The Church Committee famously looked at intelligence abuses. Now I don’t know what is happening with Frigate Bay Holdings, Chivalric Holding Company, Trustcor, Measurement Systems, or Appmosferic and their Panama/Saint Kitts & Nevis registrations - but I don’t like it. I think it’s worth some inquiries.
Or how about the programs Snowden revealed? Apparently those don’t interest the Committee either. FISA? Nothing there either.
They have no intention of looking at Russiagate or the hack of the DNC or asking about the hack attribution. Do they know what we know?
I don’t think they do. I think they are completely clueless. I don’t know if its an over-reliance on staffers or what is going wrong. But two months into their term and these guys have done absolutely nothing.
This was supposed to be the new Church Committee.
They want to look at the labeling of parents at school boards. Okay sure, that’s not cool. But nobody really cares.
Have you noticed in these hearings that it inevitably comes back to Russian interference? And every time, the Republicans are caught flat-footed.
Russian interference - it’s at least 90% bullshit. And our Congress members appear totally unaware of the extent to which it has collapsed.
Democrats tout reports about Russian influence by New Knowledge and not a single Republican mentions Project Birmingham. They mention the DNC hack and nobody brings up the fact that at least some of the same researchers around the Alfa Bank scandal were involved with the attribution. That doesn’t mean the attribution is wrong - but it sure as hell deserves a question or two.
I said this in December, they should have been working their asses off to build a team and a strategy. They still haven’t done a damn thing to this day, they have no clue what to do. They are paralyzed by inaction and indecision.
I hate to think that they can just pander to Trump, get his endorsement and cruise to re-election and they are happy enough just to do that. That’s the way it seems to me. We elected and gave power to lazy people. People without principles they are willing to fight for.
This inaction is a character flaw, and it lands on every single Republican member of this Weaponization Committee. Badass name, and the biggest joke in the Republican Congress.
What a shame.
I'm as thoroughly disappointed as you in the Committee. The way Taibbi was treated was completely appalling! Placketts was determined to be as ignorant as possible to him and Michael. But, I still believe that eyes are being opened each time the govt behaves indifferently. In a highly propagandandized America it's not going to be easy to open these eyes, but the bigger the shit-show the better the chances. Peace ✌️
