Quick Note: Guccifer 2.0 Hacked (Sort've)
Recently, a source provided some information to me they obtained from an associate of theirs.
Of the several email accounts that Guccifer 2.0 used, the AOL account was perhaps the most unusual.
As ThreatConnect wrote in 2016:
In other words, the AOL account looks odd, but perhaps (likely) they were using a VPN service.
Tonight, I’ve obtained information from someone who hacked the Guccifer 2.0 AOL account.
First, the password was a simple variation of spelling of Guccifer2.0 - I strongly do not recommend attempting to crack it. I am unclear on the legality of hacking a hacker. But clearly, this was an account that was going to be targeted by hackers and to see it using such a terrible password creates more questions. The country code on that phone number appears to be associated with the United Kingdom.
Somewhere in this world, there is a phone number tied to the account.
Why would they freely give away that information by using such a terrible password? To see a phone number connected at all to the account is somewhat suprising, because that would be a data point to trace. Even if it is some prepaid cell phone or VOIP, that can provide a great deal of information.
